Problems with Wisdom Teeth as an Adult
Many people get their wisdom teeth removed during their late teen years. If you never had this procedure performed, you may experience problems with your teeth during adulthood. Not only are those teeth in the back of the mouth difficult to keep clean but they could also be causing pain or discomfort if they are not fully erupted. In these cases, Dr. Ollerton may recommend having your wisdom teeth removed entirely.
Reasons to Have Wisdom Teeth Removed
- Causing damage to surrounding teeth
- Pushing other teeth around
- Bite problems
- Pain or tenderness in the back of the mouth
- At risk for decaying
- May contribute to gum disease and inflammation
- Breeding ground for infections
What to Expect
The wisdom teeth removal procedure is relatively simple and you don’t have to see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or other specialist to undergo the procedure. We can perform the procedure on select quadrants of the mouth at a time under IV sedation or nitrous oxide. Dr. Ollerton will need to evaluate the teeth and gums before sectioning the tooth into smaller parts and removing the tooth and bone. Simpler cases may involve removing the tooth in its entirety from the socket.
Once the tooth is removed, the space left behind will quickly fill with blood. This is normal and we want a blood clot to develop there to protect the area. We will provide post-op instructions to ensure this blood clot remains intact. You will be advised to eat from the other side of the mouth and refrain from drinking through a straw, for example.
